Kutani Hotei

I am debating about buying a lovely Hotei. One raised hand is constructed to be removable, and it is in place. No damage anywhere, and marvelous colors, very detailed work, great face. Appears to be very old, definitely not a new copy. No sign, however; does being unsigned indicate that it IS old?

Any advice you might give me would be very helpful. Thanks. James

The lack of a signature doesn't say anything about the date or even about the authenticity of the piece. Some pieces aren't signed because they were mass produced, and others are not because the artist didn't feel confident enough.

I would have it appraised by a professional if it's important to you, but it seems you really like it, and that should be the most important factor. This is my opinion anyway.
