Starvation, disease, ice age, and then a meteor.

One of two things, I believe. Either an immense asteroid collided with Earth which caused massive climate change. Or, the earth's magnetic poles reversed, again, causing massive climate disruption. This last has happened, several times in Earth's history, and scientists think it may be due to occur again soon.
