Kids Clothes - Brand Names or Whining?

My wife got the kids used to wearing all the leading brands, and now they whine if asked to wear anything "regular".

Do you think kids should be wearing brand names, or are cheaper "no logo" clothes enough?

Always look your best because you never know who you're going to meet.

I don't think it's important for young children to be wearing brand name clothing. In fact, I don't personally think it's important (for myself that is) to wear clothing with a name. If the quality of clothing appears to be good, so I think, who cares what the label says. It's kind of sad when young children start to ask by name for an article of clothing. It means they've been bought by the industry and that's not good for your pockets.

I think if the children start to whine, you can explain that brand name clothing is more expensive and not always better and if they still want it, they need to get a part-time job to buy it themselves. That way you teach them the value of a dollar. (If the children are too young to get jobs outside the house, assigning chores around the house is also a great way to have them earn allowances.)

I really thought of not answering this question mainly because everyone wants the best for their family, but this is just designer branded clothes.

You already know the answer to this one:  Kids are not required to wear designer clothing.

The clothing is not necessarily better made, and even if it was, much of children's clothing will be too small after a year or even 2 months for really young children.  So it's not the best clothing, and even if it was it will become destroyed or too small for your growing children and need to be replace at a very high cost

You will go broke.  They will go broke.  Mom will go broke.  Think of all that money just trickling away from an education, family vacations, retirement money, videogames they actually wanted, dinner out with the wife, and other activities that make life great.

Peer pressure is hard when you are that age as it is something that seems you can never escape from.  But no one grows up and says "my life would have been more succesful and complete if my mom and dad bought me lacoste sneakers".

And how do you want your kids to live, even if they are super-rich: blowing money on clothes or owning businesses?

I'm not sure of the age of your kids, but if they are old enough to demand designer clothes, perhaps it's time for an allowance and/or a job?

What will stay the same is that you and your wife will still know that your kids are amazing and talented.  That will never change.

I whole heartedly agree with the two previous posts. Depending on the age of your children when brand names seem to become an issue among peers, that is the time to instill economic values. Allowances and part time jobs are all important tools to teach your children the value of money and the purpose of savings. If they learn at an early enough age that they need to pay themselves first, 10% of all earnings go in the bank, then the left over $ they now have choices to make regarding what they want to spend it on. If that  Hollister t-shirt for $40 is so important to them, then they can see how many weeks it takes to save for that one article of clothing. When they can go to a different store and get 2 shirts for that price...They may have a better understanding of cost if they earn the income they are spending. Children that are really young, don't have a clue what is brand name and what isn't unless the parents are materialistic enough to point it out to a 2 yr old. Even then, a child that young could easily be convinced that wal mart BUM clothing is a brand name too. Good luck with your wallet and your financial future. In the mean time Hopefully your wife hits the sale racks!
