I think as each performer breaks into the business, they find themselves forced to "play" a certain role. Remember when Christina Aguilera came into the business with her song Genie in a Bottle or Britney Spears with Baby, one more time. They were both shown to the public as innocent young girls, and very shortly after their first releases, they came out with skimpy new outfits and crazy songs that were nothing short of provocative. I think in Kelly Clarkson's case, she's in transition, still trying to figure out who she is and where she wants to go with her career.
