One of the first daytime serials to premiere in a sixty-minute format, Texas, was a spin-off from NBC’s Another World and centered on the love to hate her villainess, Iris Cory Carrington Delaney Bancroft, and her exploits in Houston, Texas. Appreciated for its bitchy wit and sexy costuming, Texas initially focused on Iris and her romances with Alex Wheeler and Eliot Carrington but soon transitioned into science fiction and more youth-oriented stories, even going so far as to revamp itself as Texas: The New Generation. While the show improved in ratings and built a loyal, small audience it ultimately ended on New Year’s Eve 1982 after only a 2 year run.

Another World’s 35 year run began on May 4, 1964, a creation of a legend of the soap opera world, Irna Phillips. Set in the fictional Bay City, Another World focused less on the conventional drama of domestic life as seen in other soap operas, and more on exotic melodrama seen between families of different classes and philosophies, the philosophy emphasized by the line read at the beginning of each show, ‘We do not live in this world alone, but in a thousand other worlds.” A multiple Daytime Emmy Award winning serial, Another World has the distinction of being the first daytime soap to expand to an hour, of showcasing the most elegant sets and costuming daytime has ever known, and heavily recruiting actors and directors from the New York stage to make Another World considered to have had one of the most talented casts in daytime television. Popular couples included best friends Felicia and Cass, Rachel and Mac, Donna Love and Michael Hudson, and the triangle of Vicki, Jake, and Marley. In 1999 after 35 years of legendary romances, exciting adventures, comedy, and even science-fiction, Another World ended it’s stellar run on NBC.

A half-hour mystery serial that ran for 28 years, Edge of Night revolved around the Midwestern city of Monticello and the adventures of assistant district attorney Mike Karr and his wife Sara Lane. Rather than focus on the usual soap opera storylines, Edge of Night regularly engaged in whodunit murder mysteries, cops and robbers action, and showcased some of the most delicious and memorable villainesses in all of daytime including Stephanie Martin and Pamela Stewart as well as the supercouple Adam Drake and Nicole Travis. Edge of Night also has the distinction of airing on two networks, CBS from 1956-1975 and ABC from 1975-1984.
