Hi John,
My sympathies for your loss. So, you're ready to get back into the world but not quite sure where to begin? I think that's perfectly understandable.
Allow me to suggest a couple of possibilities.
My first suggestion is to take a class. It doesn't really matter what kind of class, as long as it's something in which you have an interest. It can be an exercise class at the 'Y,' a political science course at the community college, a cake decorating class down at the local craft and hobby store or something entirely different.
All that matters is that it fit your schedule and your interests.
Classes are a great way to meet people from your community as well as a way to engage your mind - and guaranteed to make you feel "alive" again.
My second suggestion is to do some volunteer work of one kind or another.
There are so many places where you could be useful, John. You could try delivering meals to shut-ins, walking dogs at the shelter or tutoring high school students in danger of failing.
You could also use one of your talents or skills in a volunteer position. Can you cook? Volunteer to cook for your church's pancake breakfast fundraiser. Are you good with tools? Offer to do minor repairs for low income seniors or families.
The most important thing to remember, John, is that you have to force yourself to take that first step out into unfamiliar territory. Once you do that, I think you'll find that a goal and sense of purpose will automatically follow.
Good luck.
