Actually, asking about your birth place and citizenship are illegal interview questions. Questions about: place of birth, language, marriage, illness and religious are illegal at the US.

However, employers tend to get as much information as they can from interviewee. This causes them to ask questions that are either illegal or completely irrelevant to the job.

i guess not. they should be particular when it comes to their questions.

I don't think employers will ask for those during the job interview but you have to start acquiring those since you still need them for your benefits.

The only question that I've been asked is if I can legally work in the U.S. and if so, could I provide the document if needed.

It is great that you are giving time and effort to prepare yourself for the job interview.  But you should not worry about things that are not relevant to your job interview.

Your question about the birth certificate is not relevant to your job interview.  Instead, the interviewers will look for your skills, experience, personality and if you will fit into the company.

But if your job in the company requires that you travel and drive a vehicle then your potential employer will, of course, look for the passport and driving license.  So, it will depend on the kind of job you are going to apply for.

When an employer invites you to an interview, he/she is indicating an interest in hiring you. The job interview is perhaps the most important component of the job search process.  Recently I have explored a job search guide http://www.professional-job-search.com/job-interview.html which contains a great deal of valuable information about the job search - including interview questions.  I didn’t see there any question about date of birth or driving license. So don’t worry about these things.

Your goal is to show the employer that you have the skills, background, and ability to do the job and that you can successfully fit into the organization and its culture. The interview is also your opportunity to gather information about the job, the organization, and future career opportunities to figure out if the position and work environment are right for you. All the best.

these documents will be only required if they already accepted you in your job. as for the interview itself you dont have to bring this kind of documents.

I guess I agree with most of the other answers but to summarize,

  • In an interview you can only be asked if you can provide proof of eligibility to work.
  • You must provide this proof at time of hire.
  • A birth certificate is only one form of ID that acceptable proof.
  • Anyone that asks for this during an interview probably is not very knowledgeable on the law and you probably wouldn't want to work there anyway.

Good luck on the interview, but I'd spend more time on how you would answer the 'tell me about yourself' question.Smile
