BARN MANAGER ---JOB DESCRIPTION

The term Barn Manager is used to describe widely varying positions. Some Barn Managers are responsible for the total daily operation of a small farm or stable, whereas others may be responsible for one barn, such as the show barn, on a larger operation. Experience is required. Barn Managers may be responsible for ordering feed and supplies, scheduling the vet and farrier, record keeping, and related administrative duties. In addition, Barn Managers are frequently expected to handle routine health maintenance (immunizations, deworming, etc.) and handle medications and injury care under the supervision of the veterinarian. If there is a staff, supervision of help may be required. Client relations and sales may be part of the responsibilities. A Barn Manager position may also include duties of any of the following:
  Trainer, Assistant Trainer, Instructor, Breeding Farm Assistant, Maintenance Person, Groom, Stable Help
.
Resposible for scheduling staff 7 days a week, overseeing and assisting in proper turnout & brining in of the horses, overseeing and assisting in mucking out all stalls and other general maintaince.
 
 
This is a list of responsibilities which includes, but is not limited to, what the Resident Barn
Manager is expected to do
--daily brush horses and pick-out hooves
–feed supplements & carrots
–check fences, sprinklers & water tubs (record repair/cleaning needs on stable board)
–stock hay, supplements, & carrot/treat containers
–turnout and bring back the horses
–seasonal help in breeding
–assist owner/trainer
–manure pickup
–sweep stallsRN
–bring horses into corrals & close appropriate gates
–cleanup manure and spoiled feed
–seasonal help in breeding
–assist owner/trainer
–weekly clip chin whiskers and bridal path
--monthly clip hoof hair line
–maintain tack and tack areas
–clean all water tubs
–adjust pasture irrigation sprinklers
–fertilize/seed pasture bare spots
–clean dog water tubs
–clean chicken pen & water tub
–adjust gates
–remove thistles & blackberry vines from horse areas.
 
 



Other responsibilities would include, ordering feed, bedding and supplies, scheduling and supervising, and if needed, shipping horses to various appointments (veterinary, dental, farrier, chiropractor, etc.) The position also requires routine health maintenance (icing, wrapping, worming, IM, IV shots, etc.), administering medications and minor injury care. The barn manager will also be asked to instruct, monitor and supervise the part time employee who will cover for the barn manager on his/her days off .
 
The barn manager will also coordinate weekly training appointments for the horses. Training appointments may occur at our farm or they may take place at the trainer’s farm which is located about 15-20 minutes way. Barn manager will also be asked to help exercise horses via riding or lunging on days horses are not ridden by the trainer or the owner.

Barn manager will also be asked to ship horses to shows, prep horses for shows, arrange for braiding appointments (at A shows) and act as a show groom.
