Jiu Jitsu and Pregnancy

I train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and am planning on getting pregnant soon. How long can I continue training safely once I am pregnant? I am 26, in good health,  and have had one other pregnancy 4 years ago without problems, but I wasn't exercising regularly then.

I would consult a doctor first. Don't try to exercise to lose weight. Make sure it's moderate, with you able to carry a normal conversation. Your heartbeat should'nt go above 140 bpm, that puts the baby in stress.

If you're adamant about exercise, stick to walking, swimming, yoga and pilates.

I don't know much about jiu jitsu, but from what I can gather it involves a lot of grappling, which to me sounds a little problematic. I'm guessing you can keep practicing but not fighting (if there is such a thing) for as long as it's comfortable for you, but I wouldn't go for any potential situation where you might be hit in the abdomen area or thrown at the floor.

You should probably ask your doctor after you conceive though.

Zansmom, just try to get pregnant naturally...because you have had it once without any problem. Don't get stress too much and check to the doctor is required.

Hope this can help a little bit ;)

Hey there,

I am a middle eastern dancer ( in the west, Belly Dancer). I have three children, and was told by a doctor that I can continue to dance and exercise. I would just be mindful, once you become pregnant to not let your core temp get to high. This could be harmful to your child. Also with mid east dance there is no contact as opposed to martial arts. So, use common sense in as far as no more contact to avoid abdominal contact which could of course harm the baby as well. All the very best to you and hopefully you will be blessed with a child soon!

The first few answers were very helpful. I am now pregnant, and I have stopped grappling. In fact, thanks to morning sickness, I have had to completely rework my exercise program. I'm working with my doctor to decide on a routine that is best for my body and my pregnancy. I plan to resume my training a couple of months after my baby is born. Thanks!

I am a Jiu-jitsu Blue belt. I found out i was pregnant two months ago and still train jiu-jitsu three times a week. My ob. said i am good to do grappling for the first trimester as long as i keep good communication with my partners, avoiding knee on belly (or anything that puts a lot of pressure on the abdomen) also avoid going completely unconscious with the chokes . I have to keep good control my breathing and stop if i get dizzy. For the second trimester i am planning on doing just the beginners class and practice only the fundamentals. So far i haven't had any problems at all. everybody understands and is happy with my condition and they training with me as technical as possible. Last trimester i am planning on doing light wight lifting to keep in shape and walking two miles daily like i did on my last pregnancy.  I found walking to be a great thing specially during contractions cause it helps you dialate faster. i was in labor for two hrs. and i had to push only for ten mins my first pregnancy.

How Can I Get Rid of a Yeast Infection?

QUESTION Dear Midwife, I have had a yeast infection throughout my entire pregnancy. My doctor has tested me for STD's and all are negative. He has prescribed metro gel to me. I have used this every few months. I am now on my 32 week and am using this prescription every other week. Is there something stronger I can use or something I can change or do differently to help? ANSWER Metrogel will not cure a yeast infection; it's for a bacterial infection and can actually cause a yeast infection. Have you tried Diflucan™ (the yeast pill)? There are also over the counter yeast preparations and a heavy duty vaginal cream (Terazol) that might be appropriate. If all these fail, borax washes help some women and the yeast can be cultured to see what will kill it. Other things you can do for yourself include: Eliminating sugars as much as possible (no soda or juices) Only two fruits and two dairies per day Eating more vegetables and proteins Good luck! -- Cynthia, CNM.
