I have an 05 jeep liberty V6. When I accelerate fast, as in passing, the engine revs and the rpms shoot straight to about 5000 rpms. The engine is racing but the jeep isn't. Could this be a trans problem? Does anyone have an idea? Thanks!
Sounds like a transmission problem but maybe not real serious. Do you feel ant slippage at other times? try this, in a place with some room around you, with the car id drive and foot firmly on the brake, give it some gas slowly increasing the amount and try to feel how hard it is too hold the car stopped or if you can feel slippage

you don't say if the transmission is automatic or stick shift. if straight shift, it sounds like the clutch is about worn out. at speeds the torque of the engine is enough to make it slip. if the clutch release mechanism can be adjusted, it may be possible to adjust it so that the clutch release has a little slack in it. (the clutch will require more travel before the clutch releases). If it is an automatic, have the fluid pressure checked. flushing and refilling may solve the problem. be sure to have the filter replaced (this will require removing the transmission pan). be to sure to replace all the fluid (requires about 10 or so quarts) not just 2 or 3 quarts.
Thanks for Responding.
It's an automatic. What I mean by passing is really stomping on the accelerator. All most as in flooring it. Driving in a normal easy fashion it shifts gears smoothly and at the appropriate rpms. I sometimes get over agressive and lay on it and that's when it happens. Still shouldn't do that. I recently bought it used and it only has 28,000 miles. I will have the garage take a look and test drive.
Thanks so much.
With that low mileage, it may be the "nature of the beast". the service dept. of the dealer should be able to tell you if that is normal. They will almost always want you to bring the vehicle in. short burst of high revs should not be a problem. it will have a slight impact on the gas mileage but not much. long durations of wide open throttle will cause acclerated piston ring wear and of course poor gas mileage. as an afterthought 28,000 on a 5 year vehicle seems unusally low. carfax report ?
