Jazz newbie

I am  new to jazz  and am totally lost as to the classification of the different styles\genres. I enjoy music by artists such as Keith Jarrett , Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau, Miles Davis , etc. What genre[s] would this fit into?

I think the music you're describing would generally fall into the categories of cool jazz, maybe a little hard bop, and post-bop (with Keith Jarrett veering off into the avant-garde).

Well first of all,i would recommend  that you vist this site: http://www.last.fm.com/ which is a great source of information on all musical taste-related issues.

Secondly, ill say your personal taste fits into the instrumental, piano and free style jazz geners.

I just want to suggest a Jazz/Gospel artist you should listen to and that is the brilliant Nina Simone.

Those are my thoughts. I welcome yours.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

Miles was one of the pioneers of the "Cool"

Bill Evans (although his meter could sometimes get bonkers) was spectacular.

When I was younger this type, Miles, Dizzy, Getz, Peterson, Kenton, Basie, Tatum was called progressive jazz.

If your tastes run towards big bands find all you can by a Canadian genius named Rob McConnell & the Boss Brass. VERY 'straight ahead' wonderful charts & playing.

Welcome to the world of jazz...REAL jazz, not that 'smooth (crap) jazz" that is so prevelant today.
