I read in CNN that a new commander for the Israeli army was being sworn to office today. Who is he? Did he take part in the last war? Is he planning to do anything about Iran?
The Israeli army new commander is Gabi Ashkenazi (Hebrew: גבי אשכנזי) (born 1954 in Hagor, Israel) The 19th Chief of the Israel Defense Forces General Staff. Like his predecessor, Ashkenazi grew up in Hagor, a Moshav, or cooperative agricultural community in the Sharon region of Central Israel. Ashkenazi's father was a Bulgarian Holocaust survivor and his mother a Syrian Jewish immigrant. Drafted into Israel's Golani Brigade, an elite infantry unit, in 1972, Ashkenazi first saw action in the Sinai Peninsula during the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
In the last war: Defense Minister Amir Peretz brought Ashkenazi back to the military to serve as the Ministry of Defense's Director-General. In this position, Ashkenazi became the relatively inexperienced Minister's "right hand man" during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict and, according to Ynetnews, proved to be "much more proficient" than his boss. Ynetnews attributes Peretz's decision to promote Ashkenazi to Ramatkal to the two men's successful working relationship during the Lebanon war.
About the last question I guess that no one knows....

"Bulgarian Holocaust survivor" - in which country did he survive the Holocaust? Bulgarian Jews were not sent to death camps except those from territories (Macedonia) occupied by Bulgaria at that time.
