Ipod problem with itunes account

Hello all.  I have an ipod and my ex boyfriend and I used to share an itunes account.  Now my ex lives across the country and we don't talk anymore.  I was told by the ipod people that I can not open a new itunes account and upload music without erasing everything that is already on my ipod!!!  They say i will have to get the passcode for the itunes account from my ex and go from there.  Now I can not get that from my ex, nor would I want to talk to him again.  I don't even know if he would give it to me.  Anyway, this seems bunk to me b/c how do they do this for people who get divorced, etc.??  Does anyone out there know how I can get around this problem?  They are saying that if I start a new itunes account, as soon as I plug my ipod into the computer it will automatically wipe out everything that was already on there.  Please help!!  Any suggestions??

I have to disagree with Itune also, make copies of all your songs in itunes (cd's) if you have hundreds could be a few cd's, then delete your account, open a new one. and put the songs back into your new itunes account, if you already have songs on an ipod. and did not have an account with itunes.. they cannot just erase your songs on your ipod, never heard of that.if for some reason when you open the new account and your ipod gets erassed, you have the songs on the cd's you can load back in. this is what I would try.. see what happens  either way you back them up. you are all set right.. good luck Rick

Hey Rick!  Thank you so much.  This sounds like a good idea and I was told something like this once before, but I'm nervous.  I'm not very good with computers or ipods, especially computers.  One more thing... WHAT ABOUT THE VIDEOS I HAVE ON MY IPOD?  I know this may sound stupid, but I don't know how to back the videos and music up together??? can you help please??  And, you're sure that itunes will let you inport music and video like that?  Any help you can give me would be great!!  Thanks buddy!!!

Hey Rick! It was cool to hear from you! Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate your help, but I have to confess...I'm a bit scared to try this. I will, I promise, but I haven't exactly had the time yet either. I know that's ridiculous, but I have 2 jobs and work more than you can imagine. :) But hey, I will definately try it this weekend and let you know how it turns out. (I have to work both Sat. and Sun. but I'll try to do this Sun. night.) Sound good? Take care Rick!
