Interview Tips: Salary

I'm going for a job interview tomorrow. How soon should I introduce the topic of salary? Should I wait for them to ask first? Should I ask for more than I really want?

The interviewer will probably ask you what you would expect as a salary and that is why you should be prepared. Find out something about the company and the job being offered and then try to find out what is the going rate.

Hi,


I am afraid that at a job interview you are not the leader (you are following the instructions of your hosts).... let them lead you.  At a certain point that issue will be discussed.  You have to be prepared.  There are no strict rules as per what to ask for.  It will be rediculous if one asks too much and same applies if one asks too little....  so best is to get an idea of the going rates at that specific place and give some margins for negotiation.   Sure the final figure (you decide to demand) should satisfy you.

Worry about whether or not you like the job, and if the job is right for you first.  Once you and the interviewer have convinced each other you're the best person for that job, then the topic of salary should come up.  Otherwise you're either wasting both of your time talking about salary before you even know if you want (or will be offered) the job, and secondly, if you quote too high of a rate early on, they may not talk to you about the job in the first place.  Better to convince them they can't live without you first, then they may be more willing to negotiate the salary you really deserve, even if it's on their higher end.
