Why is the International Workers' Day celebrated on May 1st, if the Haymarket Riot was on May 4th?
Hi! I started to write a considerable exposition on this topic, then realised that it's quite late in the day, here, in England, and as I have only just got home from work, (at 11.11pm), it seemed a tad incongruous that I'm writing about a 'labour' subject, having just finished 'labouring' for the day! So, please forgive me, I'm going to hand you over to Wikipedia, which has as comprehensive an answer as you'd ever need: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_Day
In a nutshell, although the Haymarket Riots took place on the 4th. of May, they were a consequence of unrest that actually began on the 1st. of May. Since Mayday, or the 1st. of May, has a long historical connection with the common man, and was already marked as a time of liberty and new beginings for a wide range of societies world wide, (dating to prehistoric times in Europe, actually), it seems to have been adopted by political movements as an appropriate date to mark the aspirations of the 'worker' or common man.
Hope this helps, regards, George Bolam
