why do plants of arid environments have fewer smaller vessels than plants of moist environments?

The smaller and fewer vessels, the less water the plant loses, which helps it retain the moisture inside.

Some desert plants have brought this to an art form, and they only open up when they feel an excessive amount of moisture.
