Insurance Company Firing People with Unhealthy Habits

Can an insurance company fire people because they smoke, and therefore are more liable? What's next, firing people because they gain weight and are therefor a liability?

Sometimes management can do anything they want. Restaurants have been talking about refusing service to the obese because they don't want to encourage obesity.

Yes, that is the law here in Michigan.  You can be fired for smoking in your own home on your own time away from the company.  As far as firing the obese, they haven't started that yet, but they will as soon as they are legally able.

We seem to like giving away all our freedom here, and having a "nanny state".  Go figure.

There are people fighting such dismissals.

And yes, firing people for being fat is next for some companies.  Just like companies look at firing people with too many kids as the benefits plan can become expensive.  

It's disgusting and actually short sighted of the company.
