Install Ubuntu and WinXP on the same computer

Well, Currently I use Windows XP on a 1.5 GHz AMD, 256MB of RAM, and a 64MB graphics card.

I am interested in installing Ubuntu and at the same time keeping Windows, but I don't know how to do it. So, does anybody know where can I get a tutorial to install Ubuntu on a computer that is currently running Windows (without ruining Windows)

Thanks,

Cristian

Ubuntu, by default, will keep your Windows installation intact. It will recognize that Windows is installed and will install itself on an empty section of the hard disk. It will also install a boot loader the enables you to choose if you want to start Windows or Ubuntu when you turn your computer on.

Before you install Ubuntu, it would be good to run the Windows disk defragmentation tool so that the empty space on your hard disk will be as contiguous as possible. It's also recommended that you will backup all your Windows files, in case something goes wrong when you install Ubuntu.

The Ubuntu installation CDs are also live CDs -- if you turn your computer on when this CD is in the drive, it will boot this CD to a working Ubuntu desktop. You'll be able to work on it without installing anything on your hard drive, and if you like it you'll be able to install it to your drive, directly from the active desktop.

you can find a more thorough explanation here:

Frankly, I'd wait a bit with installing it. The latest version of Ubuntu, version 6.10, is not a very stable one. I've used versions 5.10 and 6.06 and both of them were better. The next version, 7.04, will be released next month and it looks like it's going to be a massive improvement over 6.10. I suggest you give 6.10 a try as a live CD, and wait for 7.04 if you want to install.

Have fun!

The first part of the first answer is wrong. By default Ubuntu will wipe your hard disk clean! You'll have to tell it that you don't want it to be the only OS on your computer, and only then it will detect disks and partitions.

I don't know what version you are using, but Ubuntu 6.20 and up is definitely not wiping your hard disk as long as you don't tell her to in the partition manager, Ubuntu also warns you before she actually formats your hard drive.

I have an assignment to setting firewall and MRTG in my Linux computer [using fedora 6]. i've finished  MRTG configuration by using snmp. And my browser can view the mrtg's graphic by using http://my-ipaddress/mymrtg. but if I activate the firewall, MRTG can't show up.

Do firewall and MRTG must be in separated computer?if not how the configuration should be?.

See my site at roycebarber.com and my art at DeviantArt . I love God . I like Ubuntu OS .

Looks like you got some good answers.

Search Google for "Duel booting XP and Ubuntu".

1. Back up your files to an external hard drive! Insert Ubuntu CD. Reboot PC to Ubuntu CD. Click the Install icon. Resize the Windows partition to include Ubuntu. Done. Now when you start your PC, it'll ask you if you want to run Windows or Ubuntu.
