Is industrial espionage legal to any extent and if so are there companies who specialize in this field ?

Nothing is impossible

No sir, industrial espionage is not legal. Period. You can get a lot of LEGAL information about a company from information companies like Dan & Bradstreet and you can get a lof of information about a company if it is public from its publications and filings (like 20F financial reports in NASDAQ) but anything else is illegal.

[Industrial espionage] is illegal. The closest thing to what you're talking about, would be perhaps, "penetration testing" as carried out [legally] by network security firms.
