Independents.Political party

  • What does it mean to be an Independent as opposed to be a Republican and Democrat?  Can someone explain what Independents believe in?  Are they leaning to the left or to the right when it comes to moral values?

"What does it profit a man to gain the world if he loses his soul?"

Being an independent voter means that you cross all party boundaries and vote for the person you feel is most qualified.  It means that you are not a member of a political party and can vote for a Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Green Party, Socialist Party,  and etc. candidate if you feel they are the best choice.

So an independent voter can choose a Democratic presidential candidate, a Republican senate candidate, a Libertarian congressional candidate, and a Green party judge candidate in a single ballot if they so choose.  This is called voting a "split ticket".

You can not tell from their independence whether a voter is conservative or liberal on social or moral issues, but only by their actual vote.  As for what they believe in, it varies from voter to voter. There is no preset ideology that comes from being an independent voter.  Unlike members of political parties, independent voters think for themselves, and can be conservative on social issues and liberal on financial issues, or vice versa, or both, or neither.

Generally independent voters see the world in shades of gray, not black and white.

Those are my thoughts. I welcome yours.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

I have found that Independents, for the most part, are like the talk show host, Neal Boortz. They are fed up with the mainstream party and choose to differ and examine things differently.

The problem is that, in most states, and Independent can only vote in races in which there is an independent running.

For example, here in Florida (hold all the 'chad' comments, please) no matter what your registration you can only vote in races in which someone from your party is running. The rub is, not that many Independents actually run for anything so your right to vote is seriously curtailed.

Being an independent thinker, I was registered Independent for 1 election; saw the limitations then switched to a more mainstream party.

Hope this helps. Now, go out and vote...vote early and vote often but vote (thank you Mayor Daley).
