Best In-car Location for GPS unit

Where is the best place in the car to attach a GPS bracket?  On the windshield or on the dashboard?  Does the bracket stay firmly attached?

I think the dashboard is the best place to put a GPS bracket.  For the bracket to stay firmly attached, you will have to drill holes on the dashboard and use metal screws or nuts and bolts.
