Improving Yedda

What are you missing in Yedda? What would you improve? What would you change?

The first thing that I find missing in Yedda is the option to "bookmark" a question and/or answers for future reference. I posted the question in the past and got the answer that it will be solved soon. Here's hoping.

The second thing is the absence of "next" and "previous" buttons in questions' lists. I know it's not that important, since there are links to the various pages in the list, but still.

In a more or less direct link, I feel that I should be able to customize the number of questions each page in a list allows me to see (10 is a good default, but it should be changeble).

I also think that the "thumb-up" system should take into account the feedback of the user who posted the question gives. Maybe the asking user should be able to give moer that two thumbs-ups. Maybe (and that's more reasonable), the asking user should be able to state which answer was the best answer in his view. I think that simply posting a feedback in the string is not good enough, as the post is there to stay. A more dynamic method, resembling the Thumbs-up method, is required.

That's it for now. I'll post more if I'll think of any.

Roee,

Thanks for the inputs! (and thanks to Ayelet for initiating this)

Re bookmarking - as I noted before, it will be added sometime in the near future.

Re next and previous - are you referring to the list of page numbers at the bottom of the questions list? A new "pager" will be online tomorrow, replacing the, well, somewhat-almost-completly-unusable one. Here is what the new one looks like:

If this is not what you meant, please explain.

Re the feedback of the person who posted the question - this is an interesting question. Should the opinion of the person who posted the question count "more" then the opinion of other readers? I would love to hear what other people think of this question.

Yaniv,

The new "pager" is exactly what I was talking about. :)

Regearding the value of the person who posted the question: I agree that the fact that someone asked a question doesn't guarantee that his opinion regarding what is the best answer is always the right opinion (esp. on Yedda, in which a lot of the questions posted are matters of opinion, not fact). In that aspect, maybe there isn't much sense in allowing the person who posted a question to determine completely on his own what's the best answer.

But, there's room for an alternative.  Maybe, when I check answers to questions I've posted, I'll have before me, besides the thumb-up and thumbs-down icons, another icon titled "asker's choice" or something of that sort. I would be able to change the "on/off" states of that icon in a similar way to that of the thumbs icons. Another variation would be an indication whether a thumbs-up credit given to a certain question was by the user who posted it. These suggestions should not interfere with the regular thumbs-up ranking of the answers, but add more information regarding what the user who posted the question was really looking for.

Moreover, such an indication would allow the user who posted the answer that helped the asking user the most the satisfaction of knowing he did good. The current system gives me only the opinion of the community, but not of the individual person who asked the question.

Anything less than the best is a felony.

I feel a little bit limited on this site.  Seems like there should be access to more questions and responses at a given time.

For example, say my interest is music, then when I logon, perhaps I see the following, all displayed in a full or abbreviated form. (more than just the topic header)

  1. New un-awnsered questions relating to music
  2. Recent popular posts in music
  3. Any recent activity on my posts

I know that currently, these items are readily available, but must be physically accessed via mouse click.

Perhaps what I am really looking for is a steady stream of new and interesting information without necessarily engaging the website to find it  Hope that isn't too vague.

;)

One of the approaches to answer hard questions is to ask about the same thing with a different question. What about introducing a feature called "interpret a question" ("edit a question", "re-tell a question", "ask the same question in your own words", whatever sounds best)?

For instance the user who posts a question could have the option to leave it open to such suggestions and approve those which seem correct interpretations.

Another suggestion: what about an option to add additional tags to a question in case you think that the asker missed some relevant tags?

This could make the "asker - answerer match-making" extremely efficient. Or what about an option to correct misspelled tags?

As to avoid abuse of service, this could be implemented by a procedure of submitting additions/ corrections to the asker for review. That is the suggested/ corrected tags would appear only if the asker had approved them.
