Importing a computer bought abroad to Israel.

If I visit the United States and decide to purchase an Apple iMac computer, what is the procedure for bringing it back with me to Israel? I really don't know much about customs and different taxes, so any help would be appreciated.

For computers and computer parts, there are no import taxes. You will need to pay 15.5% VAT in Israel (save all receipts or they will just come up with the price themselves, usually higher than what you paid).

For more information, check out Israeli Taxes authority website (assuming you read Hebrew. Those guys haven't heard of English yet).

The procedure should be fairly simple. If you bring it with you on the plane, you just go through the customs' check point in the airport and declare your goods, fill some forms and get a bill for the VAT (I am not sure if you need to pay it on the spot or not).

If you send it as a package, the post office authorities will contact you notifying about the delivery and how to release it (or not, if you very lucky and depending on how you sent it, then you may just have it appear on your door step one day. But don't build your hopes up, it is probably cheaper just to pay the VAT).

I came across that website, but it's just impossible to navigate... also it looks like <censored> in Firefox :)

So thank you very much, Daniel. This was straight to the point answer - just what I hoped for. Thanks again.

What comes around goes around.

If the laptop isn't still in it's box, why would you have to pay taxes on it? How would the tax authority know it's brand new if it's in a laptop bag? and than in that case, wouldn't you not have to pay the customs taxes?
