Mrs.HO711, first off, do nothing to dampen your husband's optimism.  Second, cut back on luxuries right away.  Your husband most likely will have unemployment insurance that will be half of his old pay, possibly, and that will run for a while.  I don't know what the specifics are, but most states allow you to file for it online, and you can find out how much and for how long there.

Keep your budget under this amount and try not to tap your savings.

Thirdly, relax.  Change is a constant in life.  Six months used to be a long time for a programmer to be employed by a company.  Now some companies hire them permanently.  I don't know what kind of IT your husband does, but now is the time to take refresher courses.  If he writes XHTML/CSS, now would be a good time for him to create his own website.  He can use it to market himself and his skills to prospective employers. Or he can advertise himself as a consultant and take part time or temporary jobs until he finds something he likes.

Fourth, is there anything keeping you from making money?  Maybe doing something positive would help you lighten your bad mood.  Since your husband already has some income with the UI, he can take over for you part time on the household duties.

Fifth, check all your insurance policies.  Many times a policy can carry an unemployment clause that will pick up monthly payments for a limited time.  It is usually a rider, but some companies roll it into a package deal.  You may have signed up for it without realizing it.

Sixth, enjoy the extra time with your husband while you can before he has to go back to work.
