Humidor prep question...pre-wipe interior with distilled water or not?

The Setup instructions included with the Cuban Crafters humidor I just received says "NEVER WIPE THE INTERIOR OF THE HUMIDOR WITH WATER" but I have found other online references that include wiping the interior down with distilled water as a recommended step and two different local cigar shops also disagree. Who's right/wrong here and why ? It would seem to me that since red cedar holds moisture levels consistently, that a wipe down with distilled water wouldn't harm it.. Thoughts/Comments?

Don't do it unless you are prepared to wipe down ALL the cedar in the interior of the humidor. Cedar is a very porous wood and therefore the water will stain it. It will not damage the wood but you will get blotches (or as woodworkers call it "water stains"). Everyone that works cedar knows this. The beauty of the humidor is not only the exterior but the interior. Keeping the wood evenly colored with no blotches is the reason that you should not wipe it down. If you should happen to spill water inside the humidor then you will have no other choice but to evenly wipe down the interior. That will help hide the water stain.

Vigilant - "Protecting your passions"

You are advised to wipe the interior of your humidor with distilled water only before you actually place cigars inside. This will kind of "pre-treat" the cedar and allow the humidification to take place. It is not an absolute necessity to do, but it won't harm it either. Just be sure that your humidification levels are optimal at 70% RH before placing your cigars inside. If the levels are good, you have nothing to worry about.
