Is it true that Europe does not have the common House Fly as a pest?

OronD,

I asked this question because an aquaintance of mine visited Europe several years ago and she told me that the reason that homes in Europe have shutters on their windows, with no glass, is because there are no flies in Europe.  I found that hard to believe because I figured that some where along the way a fly or two had to have stowed away on a ship and hitch hiked to Europe.  I did not share this thought with my friend because she insisted that there were no flies in Europe.

Hi,
I live in Israel (MiddleEast) and we have too many common house flies.... I visit Europe frequently and I can assure you that there are too many of them in each country there..... true, their numbers decline in the colder (northern) countries.....  From Israel (Same applies to Asia or Africa) to Europe they don't need ships.... they spread very easily from one country to another.... at the speed of the wind....
Best regards,

In my day job I write about Blood Pressure Treatment and treat those who suffer from blood pressure problems. Low blood pressure is a particular interest and I'm often asked about how to lower cholesterol levels. A healthy heart is becoming a huge focus for many of us nowadays. Improving your blood pressure control and thus the health of your heart and circulation system is really important. My most recent online "adventure" is to start a facility for people to ask me my opinion and to provide high quality health information by answering medical questions online.

I also have a special interest in the problem of feeling Tired All the Time and in those who suffer from chronic fatigue or lethargy. This seems to tie in also to skin care issues or skin treatment problems and suggestions. Tiredness and fatigue can lead to major problems for many individuals in modern society and the way that this can affect all areas of general health can be quite invasive in terms of daily life and coping skills.

My work with footballers and athletes leads to a focus on Painful Shoulder conditions and on the problems associated with frozen shoulder or whiplash injuryRotator cuff injury causes problems for many of my patients.

When not working I daydream about my next amazing european vacation trip  My favorite European cities include Paris and Barcelona and my next blog project will be to write about the best way to spend a night in Paris and how to find an apartment in Barcelona. I just love European travel in all its forms.

In Scotland we don't worry about house flies - Midges are the thing we hate most - and many a vacation to Scotland has been ruined because of the damn things !!

Lisa: Remember that Europe is huge. Almost as large as the USA. So, you can not speak of 'Europe' as a whole, you have to speak about the country. In the USA there will probably be places where it is very cold and there are very few house flies. Same thing in Europe.

Did you ever notice that in the winter there are very few house flies?? Same thing in Europe...and in the countries where it is cold alot year round, there is not alot of need for screens, because those peskie flies are not around alot. I have lived in many countries in Europe. There were flies in some countries and not in others. Just like in the USA.

I was in Amersterdam and Paris in June and there were no window screens.  We didn't get any flies in the apartment.  Also in the city, in Ontario,Canada, if we open a door with no screen, we can expect 2 or more flies within a half hour flying around inside and not going back outside.  Both a brown type of fly and an emerald green type.
