Sometimes not a thing. If you are choosing between 2 hotels read the reviews!

Trip adviser is usually pretty good. On the side they have the real pictures not the one from the hotels!

Watch for anything that is written more than twice. If you are traveling to a 3rd world country then that one star can make a huge difference!
