Hot water reset button keeps tripping

My hot water heater is only 3 years old but I'm having problems with it. The fuse inside of the hot water heater keeps tripping and I have to keep pressing the reset button. Why is this? Does anyone know how to fix this? I've done a little research but come up with a couple of answers. Either the element or the thermostat needs to be replaced. How do I figure out which one?

It sounds to me you have a bad element you can cheak it by useing a electric tester. turn up the t-stat to engage the unit on, then place one lead on one side of the wire screw and the other on the sleel of the tank if you get a positive light than the element is ok.

You can check the element is bad by taking of the to leads to the element and trun up the thermostat and reset the button if it doesn't trip you now know the element is bad.

If your water temp is really hot its the thermostat.
