Hot Spot Treatment

The vet said not to cover the hot spot...My dog, a bichon, is a house dog. And we have a light gray carpet. First thing, after spraying her with Betage, she rolled and got blood on the carpet. I've sat outside with her so far, but she may die of a broken heart. we will put her in a closed kennel in bedroom for night, but can I really not cover the hot spot?. Prior to seeing the vet, I had used stick guaze piece and non-stick tape which worked very well. Is it because they want air to get to the spot?

My dog had hot spots and I changed his food to a non corn ingredient and he got better. I take him our every day and play with him with a ball or frizby until he wants to go back in. in summer he loves to get under the water hose. I never covered the spots and gave him a bath with mild dog shampoo twice a week in summer. I used triple antibiotic ointment on the spots. There is a supplement you can give to help hot spots, go online and take your pick. The vet tried to sucker me into giving him pills for the rest of his life but after his diet change, bathing he got much better. Carpet may hold mites so keep the carpet clean. Hope she gets better.

Yes, you dont want to cover it because it needs to be exposed to the air.  It needs to dry out, and scab up, in order to heal.  If you cover it with gauze, even lightly, it wont get the chance to scab up.  You might want to put an E-Collar on her.  (It is one of those huge cone things).  She will also be miserable with it on, but she really will have trouble rolling over.  She can lay down inside, and run around inside, but wont be rolling over on your carpet.  She wont like the E-collar either, but it will keep her from licking the wound, and will also keep your collar clean.  And in a couple of days when the wound has healed a little more, you can take it off.  Or take it off when she sleeps.  Pet Botanics E-Collars .  Good luck!  And I hope your baby feels better!

Also, there are supplements that you can give your dog every day to prevent dermatitis and hot spots.  Try something like DermCare Fatty Acid Capsules for Dogs.  My dog had AWFUL dermatitis until we started giving her a fatty acid supplement (it has to be made for dogs.  We tried Human supplements and they didnt work as well.).  She rarely scratches now!  It totally helped her

We also have a Bichon, and she get will get hot spots.  I use neosporin on the spot and rub it in.  It seems to help.  The vet okayed this treatment and also suggested that I give her half of a benadryl tablet in the am and half in the pm.  This takes a couple of days to work, but it does.  It takes at least a ten day period to see the spot healing.
