Horse riding accidents vs. motorcycle accidents

Yesterday I talked with a friend of mine about horse riding accidents. He said he once read that the number of people getting injured or killed in horse riding accidents is about double than the number of people getting hurt in motorcycling races. I wasn't convinced, so we tried to find it on the internet and didn't find anything.

Is it true?

Hose riding is by far less dangerous then motorbiking. As for the statistic: the number on bikers overcomes the number of riders, the riding surface is more accident friendly (asphalt vs. sand/ grass), the speed of riding is slower etc. I think the best argument for why it is not true is that when you fall of a horse it has to do with losing your balance and when you fall of a bike you can be run over, bump into cars etc.

I believe that is true, but on the other hand, you should know that UK researches based on riding hours shows that horse riding is far more dangerous.

Here is a quote from one of them:

Horse riding carries a high participant morbidity

and mortality. Whereas a motor-cyclist can expect a

serious incident at the rate of 1 per 7000 h, the horse-

rider can expect a serious accident once in every 350 h,

ie 20 times as dangerous as motor cycling.4 This

depends on the type of riding. A Cambridge

University study of 1000 riding accident hospital

admissions has shown:5  “

erm.. to be honest i think that motorcycle accidents are alot faster... but then that all depends on where the accident occurs.. most of the time the motorcyclist just slides... I myself ride motocross and i find the principals are the same... my girlfriend rides a horse and challenged me to a race to see which was faster.. i won and rubbed it in a abit after ^_^.. but i think there are more motorcycle accidents but less deaths.... And for the record i haven't even seen a death on a horse so i think the information your friend has is false :D.. hope i answered your question ... thanks... Joe =]

I wouldn't be so sure actually, because people are so often hurt by horses due to the often unpredictability of the animal and the injuries that often occur are severe such as broken limbs especially backs and necks with concussions being common, motorbike injuries are also high but from ACC it wasn't that different with motorbikes having 12 more cases but with horse-riding injuries costing twice the amount.

Horseback riding is BY FAR more dangerous, even though the surface on which you fall is more forgiving. I ride horses myself and can testify to the danger of riding 1,700 pounds of muscle and testosterone over a four foot jump at 25 miles an hour is increddibly dangerous.

I was riding cross country (an event where you ride heck bent for leather across uneven, often slippery terrain and jump solid jumps at a gallop!) and my horse spooked, and galloped at an ungodly speed towards a jump, but didn't jump it. He slammed into it chest first, and then flipped over the log. He broke his neck and had to be put down, I had a hole in my skull the size of a baseball. I'm riding again (much to my doctors chagrin.)

Horses:

-Horses have wills of their own

-Horses can (and do) say no

-They have blind spots, thus mking them unpredictable, even in the most farmiliar situation.

-They are aware of the power they posses

Motorcycles (and why they aren't dangerous):

-they cannot think for themselves

-you can control them

-they are not pumped full of testoserone

-they cannot, kick, bite, buck, rear or spook

So yes, riding is much more dangerous. I know firsthand how dangerous it is! Horseback riders are also tougher and stronger than motorcycle riders!
