467 thumbs up

Hordus (in Hebrew) is known to us as Herod. He was an Idumean (pagan) forcibly converted to Judaism when the Idumeans were defeated. He was probably the cruelest of Israel's kings and murdered thousands including his own family. It was because of him and his murderous reign that the rabbis forbade active missionary activity to convert anyone to Judaism.

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,

I'ld like to add to rock's nice answer (credited him with 2 "thumbs up").  Hordus was born 74 BC and died 4 BC.  He was the king of Judayah from 37 BC to 4 BC.  Hordus was an Adomean (A semite tribe living in Jordan, Hebron, Dead sea).  In the Bible Adom is mention for a place well known for it's grapes and wine.  His tribe was forced to convert to Judaism.  However he was not accepted as a jew, but rather as a "Cena'an slave" (עבד כנעני) which is not exactly a jew (doesn't exists today).  Yes he was known for his extreme cruelty but for his mega constructions as well.
Best regards,
