Hope for a lifelong night owl?

Does anyone have any tips for a night owl who has a hard time falling asleep at a decent hour and a hard time getting up? I struggle with this every day, to the point that I run to the metro (public transportation) on which I ride to work daily. I'd like to be able to de-stress and slow down by giving myself more time in the mornings; but I'm not sure how. I get home so late that I never seem to have any time, and I don't hear my loud alarm clock even when I place it across the room at times. Please help.

I was late for work this morning, because I got stuck in Zeno's paradox.

I'm the exact opposite of you, I fall asleep with no problems, and usually get up early. Your sleep cycle is regulated by genes, some people are genetically programmed to be night owls, and some people are exactly the opposite. There is not much you can do to change this. You can find more information at this site.

There has been some work done on the use of melatonin to reprogram the sleep cycle, mainly in cases where people were suffering from jet lag. You might want to look into that, but the best thing is to gradually accustomize yourself to getting up early by going to bed earlier and earlier, and waking up earlier and earlier

Hi,

this is probably a common problem and I'm feeling with you. From my point of view, it is important to organise your days around the big blocks that are really important for you (e. g. being succesful at work, having a good personal life and getting enough sleep).

Then you can determine what "enough sleep" should be. (E. g. 7 hours). And then you'll do the same thing for your other big blocks that are important for you. Then you'll have your day probably maxed out with 18 of 24 hours. Use the rest for all the stuff that's not contributing to your really important life aspects.

The rest is discipline (e. g. really getting up, when the alarm clock rings. Really going to bed, when your sleeping time is up.) I use several alarm clocks for that :-)
