Home Computer Dilema

Ijust retired at 70, and have a Dell system with Windows 98 that seemed to be a bit "light". I can't download some of the poker sites, pictures from my camera, etc.

Thinking that it's time to upgrade, but don't want a complicated system at a big price. Like to get my e-mails, play poker, do my budget on Excel, etc.

Should I get a laptop or desktop? Apple, HP, or Dell?


Thanks for any advise from anyone who might have made some of these desicions.

Hello, First, Mobile or stationary. Nowadays, although mobiles are cheaper than before, you can get a much stronger desktop than a laptop for the same price. So, unless you plan to use it around the house (kitchen,living room, etc...) or outside, and will only use it on the desk, go for a desktop. As for complicity, all systems are the same, doesn't matter if you CPU is faster. You can save some $$ if you're not looking for high performance.

I have no plans to travel outside my home office, so I'll stick with a desktop.

What makes computers "light" is OVER downloading and not getting rid of the old stuff.Do you erase or delete [two different procetures or hourses in the stable] alot? One makes an electronic 'Hole' on the hard drive[H/D] that you won't be able to save other programs(that you try to 'download' onto the h/d.The other, DELETE, done the right way erases the program and moves the other good programs in the h/d so that you can have space to download.

Lville2001, you may not need a new computer or update from your win_98. just DEFRAG YOUR H/D.I you can add more memory.

IF you aren't familiar on how to do any of that, i would recommend asking someone with an IT certification for help.
