Holding a car with the hand brake

Maybe someone knows why is it considered bad to hold an "in gear" car at the a flash light, with the hand brake and not with the brake pedal?

Have you ever pressed the gas paddle when the hand brake was all the way up?

Basically compared to the regular foot brake the hand brake is very weak, if it can not stop you own engine who’s says your car will stay in place in case of an accident?

So, let’s say your car is standing in an intersection or a light with as cars rushing in front of you. If someone will collide with your car from behind (and you are not pushing on the leg breaks) you will be hurled in to rushing traffic, which just may kill you!

There you have it, keep on pushing!

This I've figured out myself. I believe there's another reason, a mechanical one. This one is related to a component called the Torque convertor. Maybe you're familiar with this one as well?

I have been going trough several sites and I have not find anything that connects the torque converter to the use of hand brake. It does not say that there is no connection, and if there is I would love to hear about it.

But I believe the torque converter is connected to the brake pedal somehow. by braking you eventually prevent it from converting torque to the wheels. As a result holding the car with the hand brake may cause damage to the torque convertor. I'm looking to dis/confirm that...

The road to nowhere is paved with good 'intentions'.

Its probably one of those "safety first" reasons why its bad.  It won't do physical damage to your car.  Hand brakes lock up the back end.  Have you ever pulled your hand brake while driving with some speed?  Your back tires lock up and they lock up quick.  So if your sitting, waiting for a light and you have your car in gear and your using your hand brake, nothing will happen to your car.  Whats the difference if you use your feet to brake or your hands to brake.  No difference.  Try using your hand brake on hills....especially so you don't roll back

It has nothing to do with the torque converter.  Torque converters are found in automatics because they don't have a clutch like a manual.  A clutch is another name for torque converter
