I have lived on a large country estate in Scotland during the middle eighties. There was a large country manor house that had modern plumbing but it did have a toilet that had attached to the wall above the seat portion which was fed by the plumbing. The main plumbing was I believe feed by a well which pumped water into a reservoir in the attic area. We lived in a converted farmhoust that was about 400 years old. We also had a tank in the attic but it was fed from a hoes running up the side of a hill that was subsequently fed by a hose running further up the hill fed by a small stream runoff. If the filter at the top of the hill clogged the middle tank level got tooo low and we lost pressure in the house. Many older home had well pumps atteched to the sink area of the kitchen. As far as the lighting almost all of the manor houses had large windows for more direct lighting with smaller wall mounted lights in several locations around the rooms. If the room was used like our living rooms there would have possibly been large mirrors at either end where the fireplace mantel wuld have been to reflect the lights.
