Historical Issues Connected to Song Lyrics

What is the history of the song and lyrics of the song "Do Your Ears Hang Low"? Is there more to the history than as a nursery rhyme? Does the song refer to body parts as trophies once hung on belts and around the necks of perpetrators of crimes against other human beings?
