High cholesterol and heart disease

Has the link between high cholesterol and heart disease ever been proven?

I'm trying to convince a friend to start a diet program to reduce cholesterol levels, but she refuses because she thinks it's unnecessary.

I was late for work this morning, because I got stuck in Zeno's paradox

Unfortunately it is not that simple. I don't think that anyone has actually shown that high cholesterol can cause a heart attack or is directly responsible for heart disease. Not only that, but there are actually 2 kinds of cholesterol in the blood: LDL (which is considered "bad" cholesterol), and HDL ("good" cholesterol).

However, high cholesterol has been found in so many people who have heart disease that even if it is not a direct cause of heart problems it is considered a risk factor.  Read this report from the National Institute of Health that gives an explanation of the linkage between high blood cholesterol and heart disease.

One of the causes of heart attack or stroke is High cholesterol. When the cholesterol level in the blood increases, it penetrates the arterial wall and gets stuck; white blood cells circulating in the blood then enter the arterial wall and gobble up the cholesterol; the accumulation of lipid-loaded white blood cells causes local injury, leading to cell death, calcification, and the development of a collagen-laden "fibrous cap" over the atherosclerotic lesion. When the cap ruptures, the blood clots, blocking the artery and causing a heart attack. This is called the lipid hypothesis .

But Heart disease is a heterogeneous compilation of diseases of the heart and blood vessels with many different causes. Some of these include disturbances of the rhythm of the heart, calcification of the middle portion of the blood vessels and calcification of the heart valves, and congestive heart failure.

So to sum it up, I would say that it's important to understand the basics about cholesterol and its implications for heart disease. Know your own cholesterol levels, and if you do have high cholesterol, talk to your doctor about ways you can lower your cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease.
