Help for locating an assistant living facility who caters to schitsophrenia problems

I am looking for an assistant living facility who supports mental health problems like schitsophrenia in the state of Florida.  Also this place should cater to having classes for this condition and perhaps go on supervised field trips or outings.  If this is not available in Florida, I would consider any state.  She is non violent, but needs assistance in grooming for herself and supervision.

Those in assisted living facilities are independent.  If she cannot perform her hygiene without help, she is not a candidate for this type of arrangement.  There are nursing homes that cater to only the mentally ill.  I would suggest you ask this persons physician to put you in touch with a social worker so you can find appropriate placement.

If you find yourself in a "goldfish bowl" make it your own personal "ocean."

Hi,

Although most assisted living facilities do require the residents to be independent in their ADL's, there are some that have accepted residents who need more assistance than others...If she is compliant with her medications, and doesn't have a history of violence towards herself or others, you may be able to find an assisted living facility that may accommodate your mother's needs.

A couple of suggestions, call the "town social worker" - or go to your nearest "Senior Citizen Center" and ask for the Social Worker there...Either on of these individuals will set you on the right path, and help with your current scenario, and make it a little less overwhelming for you during the process of placement.

Good luck...Go to different facilities, take tours, and ask a lot of questions...you will know and feel a sense of 'calmness' when you recognize the right facility for your mother...And, the hardest part is the first day of admission - after that first big huddle, it seems to get increasingly easier each day...Allow for a period of adjustment, usually within 30 days, and up to at least six months.

I wish you and your loved one good the best of luck.
