to keep them from digging in the beds u rake back the mulch and lay down chicken wire. secure the placed wire or screen with pins made from cheap dry cleaner wire hangers. cover with mulch and dogs or cats will move on to another spot

My problem wasn't digging.  Our dog liked to lay on the plants and smash them flat!  I had limited success with the granules that smell bad (Dog gone??) scattered around my flowers and bushes.  With my veggie garden, we put up a four-foot fence which kept him out unless another animal was in there.  Max (50 lb husky) would push the wire down and go after the critter.
