A day before the trip to Budapest ended and after lots of beautiful photos were taken the memory card was deleted accidentally (by a friend that wanted to make some extra space on the card).
We continued taking pictures on the last day so we would at least have something to remember...
Is there any chance we can recover those lost photos, even if we took some photos after the deletion? What should I do? Is there software that can do the job?
I got all kinds of hits when i pasted your question in google: Just click on the link below.

Recuva is free, downloadable software that will recover deleted files on your hard drive. It might work in your situation, if you have not taken any more pictures. That means that you have overwritten your files.

Dear Nirb,
If you re-formatted your memory card, then all is lost. If you some how deleted them, then they may be recovered. Do a Google search for recovering deleted files and see what comes up. It's easy to grab a card and "format" it when you're in a hurry, but you just need a system, when the the card is full, turn it over in the holder and you'll know that it's full next time and won't grab it. As cheap as cards are now, just go buy a few 4 Gb cards and label them 1-4, etc. and you'll always know when you are close to a problem,
