Help for digestion.

In spite of whole grains, fruits (including prunes daily) raw vegetables, and even fiber capsules I still suffer from constipation and difficult bowel movements. Is it harmful to take stool softeners regularly?

4 thumbs up

Hi.  I have IBS so I can empathize with you.  It wouldn't hurt to see a doctor and get a prescription for a good medicine that helps for constipation.  It is not a good idea to take stool softeners on a daily basis....they should be taken only when really needed and not consistently.  Anticholinergic antispasmotics are sometimes prescribed for IBS.  The best thing for constipation is to exercise more and drink more water.  Also make sure that you are incorporating other things into your diet, like Almonds, fish, and other meats.  Dairy products would also help.  Extra supplementation with magnesium, calcium, and B vitamins wouldn't hurt.  But, to answer your question, it can be harmful to take stool softeners every day and it won't cure the problem.  If you want more details on curing constipation or IBS, I'd be glad to help.  Take care.
