Help deriving conception dates!

Dear, Jane:

I am writing with reference to a pregnancy of my friend.

Here are some important details surrounding her pregnancy:

  1. LMP was unkown and was calculated based only on the Doppler Ultrasound scan
  2. She had irregular cycles and did not have periods for 3 to 4 months
  3. Her home pregnancy kit reported negative for pregnancy between 11/22/08 and sometime around week of 12/20/08

Dates of intercourse:

  • The date of first intercourse was 11/22/08
  • The date of second intercourse was around 12/20/2008
  • The date of third intercourse was around 01/01/2009 or around that time

Friend went in for an ultrasound on 02/03/09, and learned of her pregnancy.

Ultrasound dating was 6W 3D.

Here are some more details of her ultrasound,

  1. Mean Sac diameter of 20mm is 6W 3D
  2. Fetal pole and Yolk sac noticed
  3. CRL measures 6mm corresponding to 6W 4D
  4. Heart rate measures 150 beats per minute
  5. Cervical length measures 40mm
  6. EDD as per ultrasound is 09/26/2009
  7. Impression: Single live intrauterine gestation of an average of 6W 2D
  8. Friend delivered baby girl on 09/09/09
  • Question #1- What is the likely date of first day of the LMP?
  • Question #2- What would be the likely date of conception?
  • Question #3- Can this pregnancy be due to intercourse on 11/22/08?
  • Question #4- Is it possible for the ultrasound to underestimate gestational age by 4 or more weeks?
  • Question #5- How accurate is doppler ultrasound, and
  • Question #6- What are the possible sources of errors?

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this letter.

I have heard great things about you and I am looking forward to your reply.

Cheers,

Partner

How Can I Get Rid of This Yeast Infection?

QUESTION Dear Midwife, I have had a yeast infection throughout my entire pregnancy. My doctor has tested me for STD's and all are negative. He has prescribed metro gel to me. I have used this every few months. I am now on my 32 week and am using this prescription every other week. Is there something stronger I can use or something I can change or do different to help? ANSWER Metrogel will not cure a yeast infection, it's for a bacterial infection and can actually cause a yeast infection. Have you tried Diflucan (the yeast pill)? There are also over the counter yeast preparations and a heavy duty vaginal cream (Terazol) that might be appropriate. If all these fail, borax washes help some women and the yeast can be cultured to see what will kill it. Other things you can do for yourself include eliminating sugars as much as possible (no soda or juices for sure, only two fruits and two dairies per day) and eating more vegetables and proteins.
