I think you should try to get in touch with the new manager and ask for your job back. Just be really polite about this, and make sure you fully understand what was wrong with helping your friends to begin with.
Maybe it was ok, but most managers want to feel that you're doing your best to do your job, and asking (politely) for clarifications might tilt things in your favor.
