Help Needed Please

If your thyroid is enlarged and has cysts all over it, diagnosed as goiter, does this keep you from losing weight? I have gained 40 lbs in the last 20 months, been incapacitated because of 3 back surgeries, and I can't eat much at a time. Please give any advice that would help. I can't excercise except in water because of all my disabilites and I am so miserable at 252 lbs. Pam in Georgia  51 yr old

Miami Laser Hair Removal for men and women of all skin colors.

Hello.

From what you are describing, it appears that you may have hypothyroidism which will certainly contribute to weight gain and slowed metabolism.

YOu need to search for a good endocronologist. Look up Dr. Sinervo in Atlanta. He's my infertility specialist but Iam sure his office can recommend a good endocronologist in the Atlanta area. It may be worth the trip for you.

YOu will need to go on medication and coupled with water exercise you should slowly be able to lose some weight and feel better.

Good luck!

if you have cysts on your thyroid, the cysts should really be biopsied to make sure they are not malignant. go to your doctor.

Yes you will continue to gain weight and not be able to lose it until the thyroid level is working which is done by medication and probably removeal of the cyst,, the medication is something you need to take for the rest of your life.

goiter does not keep you from losing weight...i am in the healthcare profession...if you like like more info. on goiter, let me know.

everreal and miamilaserhair removal: you are both off target with your answers. from what pam is describing...she has GOITER. pam may have hypothyroidism as well...hypothyroidism DOES NOT create cysts all over the thyroid glands...that is not a symptom of the disease.  hypothyroidism DOES NOT KEEP YOU FROM LOSING WEIGHT EITHER...it can make it more difficult and challenging. pay attention to the question you are answering.

pam: are you taking synthroid? what is the dose? what is your TSH level...and T3 and T4? are you seeing an endocrinologist? do you have diabetes or any other health complications (besides the back problems)?

water exercise is definitely good for you, do you have a trainer? are you seeing a dietitian? a trainer (find one w.an education...possibly in exercise science if you can...not just some guy who works at a gym) will help keep you on track and help you find exercises specific for you. a dietitian will help w.the diet part and can also act as a health coach and support system.

where do you live? i am a registered dietitian in private practice. let me know if i can help youout at all. glad to hear you are seeing a physician...hope it is a specialist. take care and best wishes.
