Heathrow vs Gatwick

We are booking a trip to Dublin, via a day trip to London. To maximize our time in London, the travel agent is flying us into Heathrow and out of Gatwick. How far apart are they? Is there somewhere we can put our luggage for the day?

Imagine a beer drinking superhero riding on the back of a rocket powered dinosaur. I'm starting at the beginning of that.

Heathrow is 20 miles West of London and Gatwick is 28 miles South of London. I would suggest leaving your luggage at Victoria Station which is quite handily placed for some sight seeing and shopping. Getting to Victoria from Heathrow can be done by tube, or the Heathrow Express to Paddington and then tube, or coach. Getting from Victoria to Gatwick is easy on the Gatwick Express train.
