Eric, I am in Central Texas, I am going to install a 5 ton heatpump. will the outside unit provide enough heat during winter without using a heat strip on air handler? I generally use our wood burning fireplace for most of our heating needs anyway.

I wouldn't spend the extra money for a heat pump if you live in central Texas. Just get a high SEER rated AC unit and forget the heat pump. It doesn't get cold enough in Texas to pay for the extra charge for a heat pump. I live in southern Oklahoma and heat pumps are not economical here...to far south.
