It is alcoholism and its abuse without other identifiable causes that causes the seizures according to the principles of neurology. Seizures can occur with the first 6-48 hours after the cessation of alcohol intake but may occur during periods of alcohol intoxication. Alcohol can saturate the mind and body over a period of time with devastating results short and long-term.
According to Steven C. Schachter, M.D., "people who have experienced seizures provoked by binge drinking and alcohol withdrawal may begin to experience unprovoked epileptic seizures.
Withdrawal seizures are most common among persons who have abused alcohol for years. When alcohol consumption is stopped suddenly or is markedly reduced over a short period of time, a seizure may occur. This is an example of provoked seizures rather than true epilepsy."
