I would highly recommend board certification as a baseline criteria in your search for a good surgeon. It's also useful to ask around--see if people who've had the type of surgery you seek would give you recommendations or if friends of friends who've had it could advise you. I would also recommend visiting doctors' offices to learn more about them and what they specialize in, even ask if you can check with former patients to discuss their experiences. HIPPA sometimes prohibits doctors from giving out information about former patients w/o their consent but it doesn't prohibit them from contacting patients to ask if they would be willing to talk with you.
