Harley Davidson starter problem

Hello, I have a 1994 Harley Davidson springer softail, with an 88 cubic inch motor.  One day the starter stoped working well not really.  It would still spin and click, but will not engage the motor or turn it over.  I replaced it with a loaner that a buddy gave me while I got the stock one tested.  I got about 12 starts and it started to do the same thing spin and click but would not engage the motor.  We took the primary cover off and messede around with the drive side of the starter eventually it started to engage the motor thinking it was fixed we put everything back together.  I got about 10 more starts. same problem began.  The other starter was tested and found to be fine and working properly.  So I replaced the loaner with the old one got about 8 starts and the same problem aross again.  What can I do this has me and several friends lost.

I have a 2007 roadking custom. I washed it and went to turn it on and the ignition light comes and head lights come on but it does not even attempt to turn over. I looked at all of the 15amp and 40 amp fuses they all seem to be ok. Any suggestions??

The lowest servant in Heaven is still in Heaven.

It sounds more like a slow drain on the battery, which can come from a few unexpected sources.  Disconnect the ground side of the battery, with the key off, and hook up a VOM set on the 20 VDC scale.  If it draws ANY current, then you have a problem.  Here are the places to start looking for a solution.

1.  Ignition switch has a dirty starter contact: even at a stop, it will drain about half an amp until the battery dies.  Replace the switch, but not the lock.
2.  Dirty battery cradle.  If it is full of grease, or has any hint of contact from the positive post to ground, it can slowly drain the battery.  Pull the dying battery, put it on a slow trickle charge, and scour the battery case with baking soda solution.  Paint with insulating paint and return your battery.
3.  Frayed battery cable.  An intermittent short from the positive lead can make your battery beg for mercy and possibly send your scooter into the scorch mode.
4.  Cold climate.  If your battery gets too cold too much, it can sulfate itself to death.  Heated garage makes sense as a place to store your scooter.
5.  A "hot" lead where it should be cold.  Miswiring can fry a scooter.  Your dealership may have a trained HD electrician.  This is a job for a pro, not a bro.
