HIV Query

Dear Dr. I had an intercourse with a woman during which I used condoms but during the foreplay I had fingered her vagina. And later used that same finger to touch her nipples and other parts of body which I kissed. After four weeks I suffered with extreme cold and sore throat followed by fewer, which lasted for two days. But my sore infection continued for 10 days followed by ulcers in mouth. Its almost 20 days now and my throat is still creating a problem for me. My tongue is white with some redness on the edges. I am also experiencing extreme fatigue and not able to concentrate on works due to tension in mind that I suffered with HIV. I had a CBC after 50 days which showewd an increase in WBC to 9.2 rest all the factors were normal. Please suggest do the conditions look like of HIV infection.

Some of the symptoms seem suggestive of HIV, however, your history would suggest a Candida infection, but you had no mention of bleeding so the differential dx is curious

UNICEF: Improving maternal health in South...

UNICEF's latest Progress for Children report highlights the risk of maternal mortality in the developing world. Here is one in a series of related stories. KWA ZULU NATAL, South Africa, 19 September 2008 The province of Kwa Zulu Natal has become synonymous with South Africas AIDS epidemic. The infection rates here are some of the highest in the country, and the provinces pregnant women are at risk. Over a third of pregnant women are infected, making them and their unborn babies the most vulnerable. Maternal mortality rates of between 10 and 15 per cent within two years of delivery among HIV-infected women have been reported. Meanwhile, the rate of mother-to-child transmission of the virus, in the absence of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, remains unacceptably high. Apart from fighting the virus, women here also have to fight the stigma. There are people that think, if youve got HIV its like youre going to die, and if youre pregnant and youve got HIV, your baby is not going to make it at the end, said Thabisile Dhlamini, age 27, who deals with the stigma daily. Reggie Jackson: Exchanging for Change

Reggie Jackson is the team leader for a mobile Syringe Exchange Program that operates out of an RV in Washington, DC. The program provides clean needles to drug users in order to prevent the spread of AIDS/HIV and other blood borne diseases. This is especially significant given the high rate of AIDS/HIV in the District. Reggie is a former drug addict and has been living with AIDS/HIV and hepatitis C for 22 years. He uses his experiences to counsel the addicts that come to the RV to exchange their used needles for clean ones. See www.preventionworksdc.org for more information.
